Why Join Band?
More Than a Class. More Than a Hobby.
Band is one of the few places in high school where students from every grade level, background, and interest area come together to create something bigger than themselves. At Hockinson, band students are athletes, AP scholars, ASB leaders, actors, artists, and community volunteers. Nearly one in six Hockinson High School students participates in band, making it one of the largest and most connected communities on campus.
What Makes Hockinson Band Different?
Unforgettable Experiences
Our students don’t just perform in the band room. They perform on some of the biggest stages imaginable. Hockinson musicians have performed at Disneyland, Universal Studios, Washington, D.C., Honolulu, and even represented the United States at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. Recent tours have included Disney Soundtrack Recording Sessions, Universal Studios performances, and behind-the-scenes studio experiences that most students only dream about.
Lifelong Friendships
Ask almost any band student what they love most, and they won’t start by talking about scales or rehearsals. They’ll talk about the people. Band creates friendships that span grade levels and often last long after graduation. From football games and bus rides to festivals, concerts, and trips, students become part of a family that supports one another through every challenge and every success.
Leadership Opportunities
Band is a leadership laboratory. Students have opportunities to serve as section leaders, drum majors, band council officers, featured soloists, and mentors for younger musicians. The skills developed through band—communication, responsibility, collaboration, time management, and perseverance—translate directly to success in college, careers, and life.
Academic Benefits
Research consistently shows that students involved in music tend to demonstrate strong attendance, persistence, and academic engagement. Hockinson band students are heavily involved in Advanced Placement courses, athletics, clubs, and other activities across campus. Band does not limit your opportunities—it expands them.
A Place to Belong
Whether you’ve been playing for eight years or are simply looking for a place where people know your name, band offers something incredibly valuable: belonging. Every student contributes to the success of the ensemble, and every student matters.
