HHS BAND MASTER CLASSES
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 6 AND SATURDAY, MARCH 5
Dear HHS Band Parents and Students,
After a year’s hiatus, the annual Hockinson High School Band Master Classes are returning to our students this year! A big thanks to the Hockinson Music Boosters for providing the funding for this important and exciting event, as well as senior Dennis Baciuc for organizing the entire event as part of his Senior Culminating Project.
The dates for this year’s master classes are Saturday, February 6 and Saturday, March 5, as indicated on the band website (www.hockinsonmusic.com/calendar) and calendar sent home with students at the end of last year and beginning of this year. All band students are expected to attend both dates.
Students will have the opportunity to work in small-group settings with some of the most well-respected musicians and instructors in the Portland metro area. These instructors specialize in specific instruments, and will be able to give a higher-level of instruction to students on their specific instrument than they can receive in a general band class. Students will work on technique and receive valuable pointers, strategies, and exercises designed to help them grow and improve on their instrument. Students who do not currently study privately with an instructor will be amazed at how much can be accomplished with a specialist on their instrument (and maybe even establish a rapport with the instructor that eventually leads to private study). Students who already study privately will benefit from receiving another set of eyes and ears on their individual performance.
Please take a look at the schedule below. This will be the schedule for both the February 6 and March 5 master classes. Students, please note the arrival times. Students in Jazz Band will attend a special jazz session each time in addition to their concert band session.

I’m very excited that Dennis and the Music Boosters are able to bring this event back to all of you this year. As a band director, I’m continually amazed year after year at the positive impacts that such a simple event has on individual and ensemble abilities and performances. We’re very fortunate to be one of the only band programs in the area to offer such a valuable program. The amount of time and money that goes into pulling off such an event is some of the best time and money we will expend all year. I hope you will all agree.
